Former lecturer at Maldives National university (MNU) and Islamic scholar Mohamed Shafiu has been charged with sexual assault of a minor.
Speaking to press this Tuesday, Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham said Shafiu has been charged with sexual assault of a minor while in a position of authority.
Police suspect Shafiu assaulted one of his students. He was terminated from his post at MNU over the case.
Act on Special Procedures for Perpetrators of Sexual Assault of Minors prescribes anyone in a position of authority who assaults a minor with a prison sentence of 15 to 18 years.
Bisham said more suspects have been charged in additional cases of sexual assault involving minors; multiple individuals charged in Ungoofaaru for gangraping a 17-year-old, and charges against two foreigners and one Maldivian for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old.
