The MP for Meedhoo constituency, Rozaina Adam and the MP for central Henveiru constituency, Ali Azim has been elected as Deputy Leaders of the Parliamentary Group of MDP, the largest opposition party in the country.
The third candidate that ran for the position aside from Rozaina and Azim is the MP for north Maafannu constituency, Imthiyaz Fahumee.
MDP did not say how many votes they received from the 21 members in the MDP Parliamentary Group to win the election.
Following the application for positions at the Parliamentary Group opened last month, only the position of deputy leaders needed an election.
MPs Rozaina and Azim began serving in the parliament in 2009 on the DRP ticket. The two joined MDP after DRP divided into factions. At the end of the internal turmoil within the party, then Leader of DRP, Ahmed Thasmeen Ali had also signed with MDP.
They got re-elected to the parliament on the MDP ticket.
Since the 18th parliament session, the position of Leader of the MDP Parliamentary Group has been under Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu). He has been an MP since 2000 with experience from pre-democracy in the Maldives.
