Majlis to hear Maseeh no-confidence motion on July 24

No-confidence motion against Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed has been scheduled for July 24.

The petition was submitted to People’s Majlis by the opposition alliance with signatures of 45 parliamentarians. The minimum required signatures for such a petition is 42.

“Sun” has been informed that the motion has been scheduled for July 24. And that parliamentarians will be sent notice of the motion this Thursday.

Regulation dictates that Deputy Speaker of Majlis has to sit over a sitting if a no-confidence motion is submitted against the Speaker.

The Speaker will be given time to make his case to speak in his defense against such a motion.

Two previous no-confidence motions against Maseeh were submitted to the Majlis. The last attempt failed when opposition parliamentarians walked out when the secretariat called for a roll-call vote.

Opposition parliamentarians have expressed confidence they will succeed in their attempt to unseat Maseeh this time, even if called for a roll-call vote.

10 parliaments from the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) signed the latest petition.
