Dhangethi MP Ilhaam Ahmed has resigned as Deputy Leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Ilhaam has confirmed his resignation to “Sun”.
He resigned from both the post of Deputy Leader of PPM’s Parliamentary Group and Chair of
PPM’s Economic Committee, and informed his decision via a message to Leader of PPM’s Parliamentary Group, Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik.
Ilhaam said he was thankful for the opportunity to work in the posts, and that he gained experience from it.
Ilhaam was one of the 45 parliamentarians who signed the petition for a no-confidence motion against Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed.
The reason for Ilhaam – who had seemed loyal to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom – to sign the petition by the opposition is unclear.
