Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) has requested the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office to prosecute former President and former Commander-in-Chief Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and several senior officials of the Defence Ministry of the Gayoom administration, for arresting Ibra while he was President of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Speaking to reporters after submitting the documents to PG Office, Ibra said that the persons included in his request besides Gayoom are former Deputy Defence Minister Abdul Sattar (Anbaree) and former Head of Police Adam Zahir.
Ibra reasoned that if Nasheed can be charged under article 81 of the Penal Code, the same should apply to Gayoom, Sattar and Zahir.
He said that he had submitted the same request to the then-Attorney General’s Office as well; but that request had not been entertained.
Ibra noted that he did not submit this case to the Police because it involves the Police. Also, the Human Rights Commission and Police Integrity Commission can only process cases submitted after the two Commissions were established, hence he could not approach them either.
Ibra added that he had also requested for the prosecution as per article 81 of the Penal Code, of 36 people involved in arresting about 800 people during various MDP protests.
