Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has said that there is no issue with the chicken eggs being sold in the country and the changes to the color and smell of the eggs are believed to be caused by temperature.
A number of people from the public has expressed concerns saying that plastic eggs or fake eggs are being sold in the country. And many has taken the complaint to social media claiming to see a difference in the usual household eggs currently on the market.
Responding to the claims, Scientific Officer at MFDA, Asif Luthufee told Sun Media that there are no problems with the eggs being sold in the country and the changes observed were caused with an issue with the storage temperature.
He said that it is believed to have cause when frozen eggs are imported and not was not stored to the temperature.
But with the complaints coming in, samples have been collected and tests are being conducted. And while cousel have been sought from the World Health Organization, no other country has reached out with any issues.
Experienced chefs have also said that aside from the color and smell, they also notice a difference when the so-called fake eggs are cooked.
"Fake eggs" have a hard yolk when cooked and the egg-white and yolk merge when fried.
