ACC requests meeting with Maumoon regarding Theemuge audit report

Former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been sent a letter requesting a meeting regarding audit reports on Theemuge, reports Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Former Deputy Secretary-General of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Abdul Aleem reported that Maumoon has been summoned to ACC for questioning – something which has been denied by the ACC.

President of ACC, Hassan Luthufy reported to “Sun” that as per standard operating practice of the commission, no former President will be summoned to the commission for questioning. He said the commission will continue to stick to the practice.

“We haven’t made the decision to summon Maumoon. We have sent a letter to Maumoon requesting a meeting regarding Theemuge audit report,” said Luthufy, referring to the letter sent to Maumoon last Monday.

Luthufy said ACC was investigating a complaint filed with the commission over the audit reports of Theemuge in 2007 and 2008.

Former Auditor General Ibrahim Naeem wrote in the audit report released in 2009 that Maumoon practiced corruption during his terms in office and misused State funds using the power of his position. Naeem wrote that Maumoon had broken the trust of the people and needed to be brought to trial.

Naeem wrote that Maumoon misused State funds for personal gain or profit of others, and that State needed to be returned the money he misused on himself, his family, relatives and friends.

The audit report, released by Naeem on April 16, 2009 was regarding the expenditure on Theemuge from the State budget during years 2007 and 2008.
