Department of Immigration and Emigration has said that starting next month, they would not be allowing expatriates from Bangladesh to enter the country without going through their criminal and medical history.
Information Officer of Immigration, Hassan Khaleel told Sun Media that under the new Departure Screening System, expatriates from Bangladesh can only enter the country after reviewing the criminal history with medical reports from an institute accepted by Immigration.
Spokesman Khaleel said that although the regulation is beginning with expatriates from Bangladesh, the regulation will come in effect for other countries in the future.
He said that a Bangladeshi company has been selected for the screening via bid and Maldivian Immigration Officers will be in Bangladesh for oversight.
The new regulation will allow businesses to view data online on the expatriates they are bringing in.
Khaleel said that they are working to implement the regulation by the end of next month.
The regulation would also allow expatriates to see their salary and other benefits before arriving in the country.
Immigration said that the regulation would help result the number of crimes committed by expatriates and reduce the number of illegal expatriates as well.
Without an efficient system in place to monitor illegal expats, the crime rate by expatriates are on the rise.
