MCS denies Adeeb’s request for transfer to house arrest

Maldives Correctional Service has denied the incarcerated former Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor his request for transfer from prison to house arrest for the month of Ramadan.

Other high-profile prisoners – Leader of Adhaalath Party, Imran Abdulla and former Minister of Defense, Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim have both been transferred from prison to house arrest for Ramadan.

MCS stated its rejection of Adeeb’s family’s request that he be transferred to house arrest in a letter sent in reply to the family’s formal request.

The letter reads that “Adeeb cannot be transferred to house arrest”, but contained no reason for the denial.

Adeeb is serving a combination of prison sentences over explosion onboard the presidential speedboat “Finifenmaa”, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement case, and weapons possession. He is also in the middle of a number of other trials.
