President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration, since coming to power, has built harbors on 34 Maldivian islands, states Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Muizzu was summoned to the People’s Majlis sitting this Monday for questioning regarding the launch date of Th. Omadhoo Harbor Project.
During the session, North Kulhudhuffushi MP Abdul Gafoor Moosa said he was informed the current administration had completed building just seven harbors, and asked Muizzu for the correct figure.
Muizzu said the current administration had so far competed harbor project on 34 islands, and had ongoing harbor projects on 39 islands.
“[Companies] have been assigned to build jetties on seven islands. There are 16 islands ready for projects,” said Muizzu.
Next, Hulhu-Henveyru MP Moosa Manik said the seats at the Male’ City North Harbor was rotting away and the harbor was in poor condition. He asked Muizzu when repair work on the harbor will start.
Muizzu said the government was working on repairing the North Harbor. He said the harbor required a lot of work and would require great expenditure. He said including it as one single project would be a huge burden on the year’s budget.
“The amount for the project which can be set aside from the budget will be determined, and that too will be done,” said Muizzu.
A number of MPs questioned Muizzu regarding harbor projects in their respective constituencies during the session.
