Massive losses after vessel carrying cargo to seven islands crash on reef

A vessel carrying cargo to seven islands of Laamu Atoll has crashed on a reef causing massive losses.

Maldives Police Service said that they received the report of the vessel “Basmaa” of Laamu atoll Dhambidhoo came in at 6:30 p.m. and police are active at the scene.

Vice President of the Dhambidhoo Island Council, Ahmed Shareef told Sun Media that the vessel crashed on the reef in an attempted to enter the island’s lagoon.

No one was injured in the incident.

Aside from cargo for the shops, the vessel was carries goods by individual people of the seven islands, Isdhoo, Kalaidhoo, Dhambidhoo, Maabaidhoo, Fonadhoo, Mundoo and Gan, all in the atoll according to the Dhambidhoo Island Council.

The effort is currently focused on rescuing cargo that can be saved.

Cargo on board include staple goods and cement along with other important items. And the incident is believed to have occurred due to strong current.

Councilman Shareef said that the island does not have a light to guide vessels into the lagoon and to prevent such incidents, some changes have to be brought to the harbor.

Residents from Isdhoo and Kalaidhoo are working with the people of Dhambidhoo to aid the police in the rescue effort of the vessel.
