High Court upholds Mahloof’s 6-month prison sentence

High Court has ruled in favor of the 6-month prison sentence issued against South Galolhu MP Ahmed Mahloof.

High Court ruled this Thursday that there was no judicial or legal basis to change the Criminal Court ruling on the case.

Criminal Court sentenced Mahloof to six months in prison on July 25, 2016.

He was found guilty of setting aside barricades at the crossroads between Boduthakurufaanu Magu and Mohamed Ismail Didi Goalhi during protests at different parts of Male’ City on the night of March 25, 2015, and forcefully entering an area cordoned off by the police.

The sentence was appealed by Mahloof on August 10, 2016, but the appeal hearings began nine months later, on May 15, 2017.

The appeal hearings were overseen by Judge Abdulla Hameed – the lead judge, Judge Abdul Rauf Ibrahim and Judge Ali Sameer. All three judges unanimously voted to uphold the Criminal Court sentence.
