Caged inside a prison cell, the life I had before no longer feels real, writes the former Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor in a letter he addressed to the people of Maldives.
Adeeb, who is serving his sentences in Dhoonidhoo Prison wrote in his letter that he was the product of many of the same situations faced by the rest of the population.
“Every belief or every rumor need not necessarily be true. The truth cannot be derived from just part of the story,” wrote Adeeb.
Adeeb noted that it has been one year since his incarceration.
He wrote that during his political career, he hadn’t differentiated between friends and family, and had taken on the burden of easing the pain of each and every person who made a place in his heart.
“Nothing I did, I did expecting a favor in return. I wish everyone well,” wrote Adeeb.
Adeeb wrote that he did not believed anyone should be denied his or her human rights.
“You would not decide the punishment for any of the crimes I am suspected of is to die a lonely death in here,” wrote Adeeb.
Adeeb also spoke of his health issues in his letter.
He said that he never wanted his health issues to be the subject of common gossip, but that he was forced to reveal his health issues due to “high hope for help.”
“My health issues include kidney stones, an internal cyst, and the eye disease glaucoma. Insufficient care and the resultant stress is an additional burden,” wrote Adeeb.
Adeeb also wrote he was aware of the current political situation in the Maldives, and said he had much to say to the people.
He commented that the political situation was not yet damaged beyond repair, and could be resolved.
