Muizzu: Land reclaimed at 12 islands; MVR 1.7 bn spent

The government has run land reclamation projects in 12 islands and spent MVR 1.7 billion on the projects, reports Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Answering a question by an MP during this Wednesday’s People’s Majlis sitting, Minister Muizzu said that the government has so far reclaimed 360 hectors of land – excluding the land reclaimed Hulhumale Development Project Phase II.

He said the government also built 10.7 kilometers of revetment around the reclaimed land.

He said the MVR 1.7 billion was spent on land reclamation and the revetment.

Muizzu was summoned to the People’s Majlis sitting in response to an enquiry by Kinbidhoo MP, former Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Riyaz regarding the progress of the Th. Hirilandhoo Land Reclamation Project.

Muizzu said the Th. Hirilandhoo Land Reclamation Project wasn’t included in the budget and that the government will not be carrying out the project this year.

Using a second opportunity to question Muizzu, Riyaz said land reclamation was one of the major demands by the people of Hirilandhoo at the moment and that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had promised to reclaim land at the island. He questioned whether the promise now stood.

Muizzu said President Yameen’s actions so far showed he was a man of his word, and that he would continue fulfilling his promises.
