Tomato prices up to MVR 80 per kilo

With low import of tomatoes, the price of tomatoes have gone up at the Local Market and the Traveler’s Market.

On this third of Ramadan, the a tomato kilogram at MVR 40-45 has gone up to prices between MVR 60-80. Tomatoes are most expensive today at the businessmen’s market at Ameenee Magu.

A trader at a square there told Sun Media that the price of tomato has gone up since it is not available.

While tomato prices have risen, the price of coconuts are still high at the markets. When it comes to sizes, the smallest coconuts are priced at MVR 10-15 a mid-sized coconut is at MVR 20 while a large one is for MVR 25 today as well.

The government has started an effort to control the price of coconuts by opening the opportunity to bring coconuts from the islands under the Fisheries Ministry. Government also decided that the coconuts can be sold at a maximum price of MVR 7.

Economic Ministry has warned businesses that they would take measures against shops that sell items at a higher price for this Ramadan.
