New lighter coins for MVR 2 brought to Maldives

The new, lighter coins to replace the current coin for MVR 2 has been manufactured and brought to the Maldives.

A statement issued yesterday, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) said that the newly manufactured coins were brought in yesterday and has been secured at the treasury.

Spokesperson of MMA, Mansoor Zubair told Sun Media that it is the new, lighter version of the coin that is going to be introduced.

While the MMA has not reveal any further details on the coin regarding the coin including the design, it is not clear when the new currency will begin use in the economy.

MMA previously said that the currency will be in use later in the year. They launched the new polymer note for MVR 5 earlier this month. The new 5 Rufiyaa note will begin use in July 2017.
