Contracts signed to install renewable energy source in Northern Maldives

Contracts have been signed with a Chinese company to develop and install electricity service through renewable energy sources in Haa Alifu Atoll.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy have been working to establish hybrid systems to produce renewable power in the Maldives.

A portion of the first phase of the project has now been completed and has begun services. The contracts signed today were for the second phase of the project.

Under the second phase of the project, solar energy hybrids will be installed at 14 inhabited islands in the Haa Alifu atoll. The contracts were announced in September 2016.

The contracts were signed at a ceremony at the Environment Ministry today with the China’s Changzhou Trina Solar Energy Company Limited.

At the ceremony, the agreement was signed by the Environment Minister, Thoriq Ibrahim and the Deputy General Manager Bryan Ekus.

A 2.3 megawatt Solar PV System will be installed in Haa Alifu atoll under the MVR 10.4 million free aid project from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

And while 17 diesel generators of 3.3 megawatt will be installed at every island with 2.5 megawatt hour batteries, cables and automatic synchronizing panel boards with energy management systems.
