Prayer at Bihuroaz Mosque yard on hold after discovery of graves

Worshippers have been instructed not to perform prayer at the yard of Bihuroaz Mosque after the discovery of a gravesite inside the yard.

Bihuroaz Mosque is one of the most historically significant mosques in Male’ City.

Its located in the south-east corner of Rahdhebai Magu and Neelofaru Magu.

Coordinator at Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Mohamed Ahusan said it was only the yard that has been declared off-limits, and that worshippers can still perform prayer inside the mosque itself.

He said the notice was issued by the ministry of April 18, Tuesday.

Bihuroaz Mosque is small is size, so a lot of worshippers perform their prayer outside in the yard due to lack of space.

History:

The mosque was built by Bihuroaz Faashana Kalo, and is the burial site of national heroes; Al-Sultan Ghaazee Mohamed Thakurufaanul Auzam (Utheemu Al-Ghaazee Mohamed Bodu Thakurufaanu) and his brother, Al-Ghaazee Hassan Rannabandeyri Kilegefaanu.

The oldest documents in existence which mentions the mosque – dating back to 1585 – shows the mosque had been in existence when Al-Sultan Ghaazee Mohamed Thakurufaanu Sirisavadhitha Mahaaradhun died and was buried.

The mosque had then been known as Bihuroaz Faashana Kalo Mosque.
