Education: Mechanisms in place to stop bullying

There are mechanisms put in place in Maldivian schools to stop bullying, says Ministry of Education.

State Minister of Education, Ahmed Shafeeu reported to “Sun” this Wednesday that every school had protocols in place to identify and address issues such as bullying.

He said that teachers working in the schools were provided training on how to identify and tackle bullying, and that awareness was raised amongst students regarding such issues through life skill programs as well as through integration of the issue into other subjects.

“There’s work being done to prevent such incidents. Not just the teachers; students are taught to respect themselves and each other,” said Shafeeu.

Authorities are investigating the case of a young student who recently attempted suicide after suffering from intense bullying at school.

Family says the 14-year-old girl was thrown bleach at on her clothes and books by a group of fellow students at school.

She later attempted suicide by ingesting bleach at home. She was rushed to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital where she is receiving treatment.

Shafeeu made no comment on the case as it is an ongoing investigation.
