Top Maldivian opposition politicians met with Indian high commissioner to Maldives, Akhilesh Mishra to share concerns over the political situation in the country.

The meeting took place at the Indian High Commission headquarters this Monday afternoon.

It was attended by Jumhoory Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim, deputy leader of JP – Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz, parliamentary group leader of Maldivian Democratic Party – Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) and former Maldivian president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s daughter – Yumna Maumoon.

Speaking to press after the meeting, Qasim said the opposition decided to approach the Indian high commissioner was because India was Maldives’ closest ally and because the Maldivian government respected the Indian government.

Qasim said political, economic and social concerns were discussed during the meeting, but provided no details.

Speaking to press, Yumna added that they shared concerns of all opposition parties in the country as well as their reform plans and challenges to implementing reforms.

The meeting took place at a time of political turmoil in the country with Qasim accused of bribery and conspiracy to stage a coup.

Both his private residence and office headquarters was raided by the police last Sunday evening to search for evidence related to the case.

Qasim’s lawyer, Hisaan Hussain reported the police did not find any evidence during the raids, but that his phone has also been seized by the police.
