Two sentenced to death for the murder of C

Criminal Court has sentenced Abdulla Nafees (Gnaviyani Fuvahmulah) and Mohamed Shifaau to death for the murder of Ahmed Miruza Malik (Noonu Atoll Maalhendhoo).

Three people were initially arrested in the murder of Miruza, who was killed in an attack with a wood beam around 5:45 p.m.on 11 April 2011. Aside from the two found guilty today, authorities arrested Ali Rifshan (Gaafu Dhaalu Gaddhoo) who was acquitted from the crime.

At the hearing at the Criminal Court today, the Judge said that Miruza was attacked using a wood beam capable of killing someone and in the spirit of revenge. And the verdict delivered today said that the evidence show that Miruza died from the injuries sustained in the attack.

Nafees and Shifaau were sentenced to death based on witness testimony proving they were involved in the attack.

The Judge said that the family of Miruza also wants death for the accused and the death sentence was given in reference to the penal code in effect at the time of the crime and the new penal code.
