Narudhoo powered with on generator, another to be brought in tonight

After a fire incident inside the powerhouse of Shaviyani Atoll Narudhoo has resulted in an island-wide electrical blackout, power has been restored with on generator.

In the incident that took place around 12:05 p.m. today, the fire started on the 80 kW and the 50 kW generators at the powerhouse. It took about 20 minutes to control the fire with the effort from the island’s residents.

Talking to Sun Media, the Managing Director of FENAKA Corporation, Ahmed Shareef said that power was restored around 5:35 p.m. with the 50 kW generator at the islands. And they are working to bring a 128 kW generator from Shaviyani Feydhoo.

He said that the 50 kW generator can power 111 residential homes and when the 128 kW generator arrives, it will be used as a backup.

A statement issued by FENAKA today said that the two generators were destroyed beyond use in the fire and the incident is being investigated by the Police.
