Ibrahim Mamnoon, South Mahchangolhi representative at Male’ City Council and ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) member has announced allegiance to former Maldivian President and PPM’s ousted leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Speaking to press in front of H. Thema – which used to house PPM headquarters – last Sunday night, Mamnoon said he was forced to vote in favor of ousting Maumoon from PPM during the party’s council vote.
“The submission of motion to oust the Leader of PPM to the unconstitutional council meeting held by ‘Dharubaaru Faction’ itself was irregular. Some of the council members themselves noted this,” said Mamnoon.
Mamnoon said that he, along with majority of other PPM members, still considered Maumoon to be the party’s true leader.
He also apologized to the general public for voting to oust Maumoon.
“Article 57 (c) of the party’s Constitution clearly states PPM’s advisor does not have any authority to actively participate in the management of the party or determining party policies,” said Mamnoon.
He said the majority of his constituents stood with Maumoon, and pledged his full cooperation to Maumoon’s political work with the opposition.
