Mauroof: MDP members not ashamed to step on the constitution

MP for the Kendhikulhudhoo constituency and Deputy Leader of MDA, Ali Mauroof has said that members of the opposition MDP are not ashamed to degrade the Constitution of the Maldives and step on it.

Mauroof made the remark tonight on TVM’s “Raajje Miadhu” (Maldives Today) program. He said that while MPs represent the people from across the country, they have to be respected by the people.

Parliament session today was especially heated prior to the no-confidence vote against the Speaker, Abdulla Maseeh where the opposition MPs attempted to obstruct the vote. And pictures of the MP for Mahchangolhi constituency, Mariya Ahmed Didi standing on the Constitution today has also come out.

Mauroof said that MPs are supposed to work within and uphold the Constitution. And an MP representing the people obstructing a sitting while stepping on the Constitution is “too much.”

He said that nothing against the law took place at the Parliament floor today and the opposition MPs had no right to obstruct the proceeding.
