Yellow alert issued to parts of south

Maldives Meteorological Service has issued yellow alert to the southern part of Maldives from L. Atoll to G. Dh. Atoll with torrential rain and thunderstorms expected over the area.

The yellow alert to the area will remain in effect from 9 am to noon, this Wednesday.

Met Office advises people living in the area to prepare for flooding due to the rain by barricading entrances to homes with sacks of sand, moving household items to higher ground, and keeping electrical items switched off when not in use.

The authority also advises the people to brace for strong winds by weighing down roofs of homes.

National Disaster Management Center can be reached for assistance through the phone number 115.

Meanwhile, Met Office has issued a white alert to parts of the northern, central and southern atolls, and warns of widespread rain and occasional heavy thunderstorms throughout.

Surface winds are expected to vary between north east to easterly at 10 –18 miles per hour in central and northern atolls and south to southwesterly at 5 – 15 miles per hour in southern atolls.

Winds may gust 40 miles per hour during showers.

Met Office forecasts moderate to rough seas throughout the country and advises seafarers to look for the latest weather updates before embarking on journeys.
