Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM)’s annual report for 2016 shows majority of complaints filed with the commission were regarding the right to housing.
HRCM released its annual report for 2016 this Monday morning.
The report shows 533 cases were filed with the commission in 2016, out of which 61 investigations were initiated by the commission.
Following cases related to housing rights, the majority of complaints filed with the commission were regarding lack of sufficient healthcare and rights of inmates.
The categories and number of cases filed with HRCM in 2016:
• Inhumane treatment: 33 cases
• Child rights: 50 cases
• Women’s rights: 7 cases
• Rights of elderly and people with disabilities: 13 cases
• Insufficient healthcare: 68 cases
• Right to education: 6 cases
• Housing rights: 138 cases
• Employee rights: 26 cases
• Expatriate worker rights: 25 cases
• Justice system: 26 cases
• Economic and social rights: 35 cases
• Rights of inmates: 64 cases
• Rights of suspects detained: 42 cases
The annual report shows HRCM completed investigating 309 of the 533 cases filed with the commission in 2016.
25 of the cases were sent to HRCM’s southern regional office; the commission completed investigating 17 of them.
