Narcotics found within clothing sent for inmate

Maldives Correctional Service has confiscated narcotics found hidden within clothing sent for an inmate at Maafushi Prison by his family.

MCS said the narcotics were discovered last Sunday, and that the case was under investigation by the police.

MCS reports an increase in number of contraband seized by the authority which are smuggled within items sent for inmates.

The authority condemned the attempts made to smuggle contraband into prisons, warning that it was detrimental to rehabilitation of inmates.

The authority said it was also unfair for people who use their family visits appropriately.

MCS said it was harmful to both inmates and the community, and appealed to families of inmates to stop such attempts.
