The Malé City Councilor for the Mid-Henveiru constituency, Zaidul Ameen, who was arrested for blackmail has appealed the Criminal Court ruling to transfer him from house arrest to Police custody.
The first hearing in the case is scheduled at the High Court for 1:30 p.m. today.
Zaid’s attorney, Mahfooz Saeed said that the appeal was filed since there is no legal reason to keep his client is custody.
After the duration of the initial remand expired, it was extended by 13 days.
In his statement after being transferred into Police custody, Zaid said that while he is being accused of blackmail, the Police have failed to mention the victim of his blackmail and while his phone and laptop has been seized by the Police, there have been no evidence against him in them.
City Councilor Zaidul Ameen is a member of the Maumoon Faction of PPM. He lost his position on the PPM Council after a disciplinary issue against him.
