A group of lawmakers are petitioning for a vote of no confidence to remove Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh from his seat.
The lawmakers announced the submission of the petition in a press conference held in front of People’s Majlis this Wednesday morning.
They include some lawmakers from both the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
They reported the petition was submitted with the signature of 26 lawmakers.
As per Majlis regulation, lawmakers are required to submit a petition with signatures of no less than 15 lawmakers along with the reason, if they wish to petition for a vote of no confidence on a Speaker of Majlis.
Speaker of Majlis and other lawmakers are required to be sent notice within no more than three working days after a petition is submitted.
The petition needs to be read to the People’s Majlis at the earliest Majlis sitting after a period of 10 working days from the date the notice is sent.
