AG announces plans to reform Criminal Procedure Act

Attorney General Mohamed Anil has announced that State agencies have noted reforms which need to be made to Criminal Procedure Act.

The announcement was made this Sunday morning during inauguration of the workshop on the Criminal Procedure Act to Maldives Police Service, Prosecutor General’s Office and Attorney General’s Office.

“We are working on proposing the reforms to People’s Majlis after discussions in lights of necessary reforms identified by relevant agencies,” he said.

Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham said that list of recommendations for reforms needed for the law has been sent from the Prosecutor General’s Office to Attorney General’s Office.

She said the reforms were vital in order to achieve the purpose of the law.

“AG’s Office has been sent a number of reforms to address issues which will arise from changes when the law is implemented,” said Bisham.

Criminal Procedure Act was passed by People’s Majlis on April 18, 2016 after it was submitted on December 15, 2014.

The bill was ratified by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on May 2, 2016. But People’s Majlis voted to stall implementation of the law on November 21, 2016.
