Breast cancer clinic in Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital was officially re-opened by First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim this Wednesday.
Speaking during the function held to inaugurate the clinic, CEO of IGMH, Farhath Shaheer said that the clinic was reopened at the initiative of Department of Radiology and Department of Surgery.
Shaheer said it had taken hard work over a long period of time to re-open the clinic, and that the quality of services had been made better and more convenient to patients.
“Especially for women who face multiple inconveniences after making appointments with doctors, arrangements have been made for more convenient services to prevent and treat the disease,” said Shaheer.
Shaheer said the clinic will be initially opened one day a week. But will expand its services based on demand.
Services will be provided by Department of Radiology of IGMH every Tuesday (except for public holidays) from 8 am to 12 pm.
Those who are referred to surgeons after the screening process will be given the service every Thursday (except for public holidays) from 8 am to 2 pm.
Head of Radiology Department, Senior Consultant in Radiology, Dr. Aminath Nazeer said the department recommended high risk women above 40 years of age and high risk women below age of 40 years to screen for breast cancer.
“High risk people are first degree relatives. Someone who belongs to a family with ovarian cancer,” said Aminath Nazeer.
She said the team at the clinic will be an all-female educated and experienced doctors. And that the services will be provided with the aid of modern equipment.
She said that anyone who wished to get treated needed to register with the clinic.
“On the day you come to receive services, you will be screened from the focal point and your information will be collected. In instances where mammograms are required based on the information Ultra Sound and MRI services are also available. Reports with any sign of cancer will be referred to a doctor,” said Aminath Nazeer.
