Sri Lankan Foreign Minister arrives for Joint Commission meeting

Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Mangala Samaraweera has arrived in Maldives for the 3rd Maldives-Sri Lanka Joint Commission meeting.

Minister Samaraweera was received at Velana International Airport this Wednesday morning by Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Asim.

Meetings are in progress between officials from Maldivian and Sri Lankan government with Samaraweera’s arrival.

The ministerial level meeting is scheduled to be held on Thursday, February 9.

The Joint-Commission was established in 1984, but the first meeting was held in 2006, and the second meeting – in 2014.

Discussions between the two countries will focus on strengthening cooperation in tourism, fisheries, education, health care, job opportunities and cultural exchange.

Minister Samaraweera is scheduled to meet with Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during his visit.
