Weekly inspections launched on Travelers’ Market

Police, Maldives Immigration and Ministry of Economic Development has launched a series of inspections to check for irregularities in Travelers’ Market.

Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Abdulla Mohamed spoke to “Sun” this Tuesday and said that authorities will be inspecting Travelers’ Market to ensure businesses operating there are compliant with the law.

“We will be running weekly inspections. This is being carried out by us, police, and Immigration,” said Abdulla.

Abdulla said that so far, two businesses discovered operating unregistered have been fined MVR 10,000 each.

Authorities will be looking for violations of laws on business registration, consumerism and labor during the inspections.

Meanwhile, businesses operating in Travelers’ Market have made two requests to the government; authorizing a foreign worker for each stall and passing a uniform.

Abdulla said the requests required amendments to the law, and that it was under discussion by Ministry of Economic Development.
