United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Patricia A. Butenis has said that people’s everyday lives must be made secure.
Speaking at the reception at Traders Hotel to mark the 236th Independence Day of the US, Butenis said that reports are being received regarding incidents of police brutality, attacks on journalists, and unrest during protests.
She noted that the trainings provided by the US to Maldives Police are focused on protecting and respecting human rights.
Butenis also noted that the citizens of the Maldives should be the ones to resolve the current political conflicts in the country, and expressed confidence that dialogue between political parties, as well as the work of the Commission of National Inquiry will lead to positive outcomes.
The Independence Day of the United States is 4 July. Since then, the country’s number of states has expanded from 13 to 50.
