US to assist with restoration of destroyed museum monuments

The United States has assured assistance in restoring the historic monuments at the National Museum, which were destroyed on 7 February.

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Patricia A. Butenis made this statement while speaking at a reception held at Traders Hotel yesterday, to mark the Independence Day of the US.

She said that the monuments are part of the Maldivian history, and called on the relevant authorities to ensure that they are passed on to future generations.

She noted other areas in which the US provides assistance to Maldives, and mentioned their efforts to develop the education sector in Maldives. She also mentioned several programs carried out by USAID in Maldives.

Vice President Mohamed Waheeddeen also spoke at yesterday’s reception. He praised the US and thanked them for their assistance.

The reception was also attended by members of the cabinet, senior officials of independent institutions, and members of Parliament.
