Capacity of judges needs to improve for Judiciary to perform better: Justice Adam Muhammad

Supreme Court Justice Adam Muhammad has said that improving the capacity of judges is the most important thing to be done at present, in order to enhance delivery of justice for the people.

Justice Adam, who is also the President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), spoke in these terms in his inaugural address at the Chief Magistrates’ and Court Administrators’ Conference that began today at the Judicial Training Centre (JTC) in Vilimalé.

Justice Adam said that every judge must have the ability to interpret the Constitution, as it needs to be done at times in the dispensing of justice. He also said that some Articles of the Constitution presupposed the ability in judges.

“Our Constitution demands from us that we should envision this, should conduct research into what is happening in the world around, and should acquire and maintain our ability to find meaningful solutions to problems that we are called upon to tackle”, said Justice Adam.

Justice Adam also stated that the Judiciary could only gain the trust of the people by avoiding delay of justice and also by delivering sentences appropriately. “We have to be serious about ever trying to improve our knowledge, skills and capacity as judges”, said Adam.

Justice Adam also called upon all judges of the country to live up to the judges’ code of ethics so that the people would have confidence about the political impartiality of judges.

In the Chief Magistrates’ and Court Administrators’ Conference that began today, and organized by the Department of Judicial Administration, a Magistrate and an Administrative Officer from each of the 20 Judicial Divisions of the Maldives participated. The Conference would continue for two days, according to the Department of Judicial Administration.
