President of Maafushi Council given 3-month suspension

President of K. Maafushi Council, Mustafa Mohamed has been given a three-month suspension.

Sources inform “Sun” Mustafa was given the suspension over a decision he made, which resulted in conflict of interest.

Mustafa has confirmed he was given a three-month suspension by K. Atoll Council, and reports he was given the suspension over allegations he threatened the Vice President of Maafushi

Council and the staff of the council – allegations which he refuted.

He also reported that his suspension was liked to his decision to contend the upcoming Local Council Election as an independent candidate.

Mustafa said he was the fourth President of Maafushi Council to be elected within a single term.

He said that he, and previous presidents had their hands tied due to lack of cooperation from the administrator and budget officer.

Meanwhile, the administrator, Ali Nashid refuted Mustafa’s allegations, claiming that whatever progress made by Maafushi had been due to his service as island chief of Maafushi.

Mustafa said that he sent an internal memo to Ali Nashid over delays in important paperwork such as registration of the council property. He said that it was his duty as President of the Council to press the staff over such issues.

Maafushi Council is unavailable for an official comment on the issue at the moment.
