Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has submitted proposals to undertake airport construction projects in five islands, including H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi.
MTCC submitted proposals for airport construction in:
1. H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi
2. Sh. Funadhoo
3. R. Fainu
4. Lh. Felivaru
5. G. Dh. Faresmaathodaa
In an exclusive interview with “Sun”, CEO of MTCC, Ibrahim Ziyath confirmed that the company had submitted proposals for airport construction along with the land reclamation needed to build the airports in the five islands.
“We have sent proposals to the government for five projects. It includes full airport construction, including dredging,” said Ibrahim Ziyath.
He said MTCC was yet to receive an official response.
Three of the five airport construction projects MTCC has expressed interest in undertaking is included in the State Budget 2017.
Which are:
1. Land reclamation and airport construction in H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi (MVR 157 million)
2. Land reclamation and airport construction in Sh. Funadhoo (MVR 150 million)
3. Land reclamation and airport construction in G. Dh. Faresmaathodaa (MVR 147 million)
President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom pledged to build an airport in Kulhudhuffushi during his tour of H. A. Atoll and H. Dh. Atoll in October.
He said that the planned airport project in Kuhudhuffushi had laid stagnant due to lack of cooperation from the Kulhudhuffushi Council at the time.
President Yameen pledged to build an airport in Kulhudhuffushi and make it operational in 2017.
The nearest airport to Kulhudhuffushi lies 18 kilometers away, in H. Dh. Hanimaadhoo.
Minister of Tourism, Moosa Zameer announced recently that government wanted to widen the local air transport network and envisioned an airstrip measuring minimum 1.2 kilometers in every Maldivian island within a 30-minute speed boat ride.
