Maldives Police Service has said that they did not obstruct the opposition function held at Hulhumeedhoo, Addu City.
The Maldives Unites Opposition (MUO) attempted to hold the function tonight with the podium on the side of a major road with chairs across the road calling to hold the local council election.
Shortly after the event began, Police in riot gear dispersed the crowd and pushed back the podium and the sound system.
Media Official of the Police told Sun Media that the Police did not obstruct the event or put an end to it.
But the event was being held near the Hulhumeedhoo Court and so the people gathered near the court was dispersed.
When the Police was dispersing the people, the Vice President of MDP, Mohamed Shifaz was talking on Raajje TV saying that the Police was obstructing the people’s efforts to hold an independent election.
He said that there was no action at the function that would threaten the peaceful nature of the gathering. Shifaz said that the Police was threatening to disperse the event when it started.
After the Police dispersed the opposition event on the road, it was regrouped in the grounds of the dental clinic run by the former President of MDP, Ibrahim Didi a.k.a. (Dr. Didi).
