The doctor who analyzed the body of Mohamed Ibthihal, 3, from V. Rakeedhoo has testified that the toddler was clearly strangled, and suffered from internal bleeding.
The State has charged Ibthihal’s mother, Afiya Mohamed over his death.
During his testimony at the court hearing this Monday, Dr. Ahmed Nishan – who analyzed Ibthihal’s body – said that the probable cause of his death was strangulation, which had led to internal bleeding within the toddler’s stomach.
Dr. Nishan testified that Ibthihal had broken ribs, which could have been treated if he had been alive.
Additional doctors; Dr. Abbas Abdul Hameed and Dr. Ahmed Ziyan have their testimonies pending.
During Monday’s hearing, State prosecution pushed for a defense attorney to be hired for Afiya.
The judge said a defense attorney cannot be hired for Afiya as long as she refused legal representation.
Afiya has already confessed to court that her abuse led to Ibthihal’s death.
Afiya confessed that she had abused Ibthihal ever since he was transferred over to her care from her mother.
She said she abused Ibthihal every time she lost her temper because he was illegitimate.
