Gynecologist at ADK Hospital, Dr. Nazma Hameed has remarked that reproduction issues were prevalent in Maldives, with high number of patients coming in with ovarian cysts.
Dr. Nazma said that one of the leading causes of ovarian cysts was being overweight.
She said that being overweight resulted in a lot of health issues, leading to ovarian cysts.
“Problem of ovarian cysts is high in Maldives. One of the causes is being unable to control body weight. Females as young as 13 or 14 years of age gain excess weight over lack of proper monitoring,” said Nazma.
She said that lack of proper monitoring of weight from childhood onwards led to reproduction issues when the women get married and want to have families.
She said that many such patients who come in have undergone changes to their hormones because of the excess weight.
Nazma urged proper monitoring of weight from childhood over medical treatments to counter the negative effects of excessive weight gain.
She said that some of her patients who come in with ovarian cysts are sent to dieticians, and are able to bear children with no medical treatment, simply by adopting a proper diet and exercise regime to lose weight.
“Menstruation cycle is regulated with no medication, simply through exercise. Dependency in medication is not the solution. You need to lose weight. I want to say this especially to young women, lose weight,” said Nazma.
Nazma said that 90 percent of gynecology patients except for pregnant women come in with ovarian cysts.
Dr. Nazma was a participant of the Health and Medical Expo 2016 of behalf of ADK Hospital.
She took information sessions for women and expectant mothers during the expo.
