First marine science symposium in Maldives begins

The first marine science symposium in Maldives has begun in Maldives National University (MNU) with the participation of 80 parties.

The one-day symposium being held this Thursday is an initiative of Marine Research Center, and is being run in collaboration of MNU as well as other stakeholders.

Marine Research Center reported that any party doing research work in the field of marine science had the opportunity to participate in the symposium, and added that the 80 parties participating in the event were doing such research work – some running their projects in resorts.

An official from MRC who spoke to “Sun” said that participants will be sharing information regarding their research projects with the whole group.

“The purpose of such a symposium is to develop the country’s marine science field, and to promote research in this area,” said the official.

The symposium was inaugurated by Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. Mohamed Shainee.

Speaking during the inauguration, Dr. Shainee noted that the larger part of Maldives consisted of the ocean, and doing research on the marine life and finding out more was of immense importance.

He asked that researchers continue with their projects and make good use of their findings.
