President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has pledged to start multiple development projects in H. Dh. Makunudhoo before the end of 2017.

President Yameen made the pledges during his visit to Makunudhoo this Wednesday – the last stop in his tour of islands in H. Dh. Atoll and Sh. Atoll.

After officially inaugurating a mosque built on the island, President Yameen said that a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant, along with a storage tank – funded by OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) -would be arranged so that the people of Makunudhoo would have access to clean drinking water before the end of 2017.

He also pledged to establish a sewerage system in Makunudhoo, saying that Makunudhoo was one of 55 Maldivian islands where sewerage systems would be built.

“Be assured that by end of the 55-island sewerage project… Now Makunudhoo has become a quite close place to me… So god willing, we will prioritize Makunudhoo in the sewerage project,” said President Yameen.

He also said that Makunudhoo was part of the solar energy project planned by the government for H. Dh. Atoll and Sh. Atoll. He said the project would be initiated in Makunudhoo during 2017.

Makunudhoo is located quite far from other islands in H. Dh. Atoll, taking five hours to travel to Kulhudhuffushi by boat.

President Yameen said that MTCC (Maldives Transport and Contracting Company) ferry services would begin soon between Kulhudhuffushi and Makunudhoo.

He also pledged to open a fishermen’s market and establish an ice plant in Makunudhoo before the end of 2017.

He said that completely new fisheries projects would start in Maldives in 2017, and asked that fishermen of Makunudhoo work hard to ensure they are eligible for the projects.

In addition, he pledged to make services from Makunudhoo Health Center to be made available 24-hours a day by beginning of November.

President Yameen asked that the people of Makunudhoo be appreciative, and asked for their continued support.
