Maumoon asks AG to "protect electoral rights of PPM"

Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has requested the Attorney General of Maldives, Mohamed Anil to take necessary measures to protect the electoral rights of PPM members.

In his letter to AG Anil, Maumoon said that conflicts within PPM council over whether or not to hold a primary for President Elections was by no means a secret.

He said the conflict arose when some PPM council members advocated awarding President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom the party ticket to enter Presidential Elections 2018 without holding a primary.

Maumoon said that, however, some council members felt awarding the party ticket without holding a primary a violation of the PPM Constitution.

He alleged that President Yameen was trying to marginalize him, who had been elected Leader of PPM by the vote of the members of the party, and gain full control over the party for himself.

Maumoon cited Article 57 (c) of PPM Constitution, which says that advisor of the party – President Yameen – had no active authority in running the party or forming party policies.
