President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has announced that the monthly fee taken from people of H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi will be cut down from MVR 100 to MVR 30 per household.
President Yameen made the announcement this Wednesday afternoon, during his visit to H. Dh. Makunudhoo as part of his ongoing visits to islands in H. Dh. Atoll and Sh. Atoll – including H. Dh. Kulhudhuddushi.
He said the biggest complaint he received from the people of Kulhudhuffushi was the high fee taken for sewerage services in the island.
“God willing, I will cut down the fee starting the first day of next month. I will change it from MVR 100 to MVR 30,” said President Yameen.
He has also announced that an airport would be built and made operational in Kulhudhuffushi in 2017. He said that money for the project had already been allocated in the projected State budget for 2017.
It had been discussed earlier that the airport would be built in the swamp area in Kulhudhuffushi, something that many opposed due to concern over the negative environmental impact.
President Yameen said that if the council had cooperated with the government, Kulhudhuffushi would now have had its airport.
“But we didn’t get the cooperation from the council at the time. But the current council agrees that it should let us build the airport as we wish,” he said.
He said that airports would be built in both H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi and Sh. Funadhoo. And that it was a “done deal.”
