Maumoon appeals PPM takeover with Supreme Court

The court ruling ordering President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to take over running of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has been appealed with Supreme Court on behalf of

Leader of PPM, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

The original ruling ordering the takeover was made by Civil Court on October 16, it was then upheld by High Court on October 20, after a general PPM member – Abbas Wafir – appealed the ruling, before Maumoon did.

Ruling political party, PPM is currently divided into two factions comprising of Yameen loyalists and Maumoon loyalists.

Secretary-General of PPM, chosen by Maumoon’s faction, Abdul Aleem has confirmed that the ruling had been appealed with Supreme Court.

Original Civil Court lawsuit was filed by two PPM councilmen – Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam and Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, complaining that council meetings weren’t being held as was required.

Civil Court ruled that Maumoon was incompetent, ordering that advisor of PPM – President Yameen take over.
