Maldives-Thailand Trade Committee meeting set for this week

The second meeting of the Maldives-Thailand Joint Trade Committee has been set for this week.

Mrs. Apiradi Tantraporn is set to arrive in the Maldives on Wednesday for the meeting along with a delegation of 30 Thai business owners.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Economic Ministry today, the Business Development Consultant at the Ministry, Nuha Riza said that the Thai Minister is arriving in the Maldives under the 2013 agreement between the two countries.

A Joint Trade Committee was formed under the 2013 Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation between the Maldives and the Kingdom of Thailand and the committee meeting in the year was held in Thailand.

Topics of discussions in this week’s meeting would include investment opportunities for Thai businesses according to the Economic Ministry. Thailand is a major partner in the local trade and so the issues and solutions in the import-export would be discussed.

The Joint Committee meeting would proceed in two folds; one is the meeting of the senior trade officials of the two countries on Wednesday and the Ministerial-level meeting on Thursday. Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and the Thai Minister of Commerce is set to attend the meeting on Thursday.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom paid an official visit to Thailand earlier this year and met the Thai Prime Minister, General Prayut Chan-o-cha where the two discussed to build relations between the two countries outside the trade.
