Actual rebels are those who commit arson against public property: Spokesperson

Abbas Adil Riza, Spokesperson at the President’s Office, has today vehemently criticized the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), saying that “actually, rebels are the ones who set fire to the property of the people”.

Speaking in a gathering held at K. Dhiffushi by Jumhoory Party (JP), Abbas, who is also a Council Member of JP, said that MDP had committed terrorist acts in the past, and that they must be described as terrorists.

Referring to the way in which former President Nasheed commanded security forces during the confrontations of MDP and protesters against his government on the night of 6th February this year, Abbas said that “Nasheed and (the then) senior commanders of the Police tried to perpetrate a massacre in this country”. He said that Nasheed’s MDP tried, by using its activists, to go to bloodshed and use it to announce a State of Emergency in the country.

“They fed their goons with alcohol, armed them with logs and other such weapons and sent them to Artificial Beach area, where the confrontation took place, to carry out a massacre. There was a deceptive plan behind this, and that was to push the country into a State of Emergency, abolish the courts of law and the People’s Majlis, and to undermine the Constitution”, said Abbas.

Abbas said that it is the duty of everyone to give this information to the National Inquiry Commission.

Abbas also criticized Ibrahim Mohamed Salih, the Parliamentary Group Leader of MDP, and also criticized some of the projects initiated by Nasheed’s Government, saying that those projects were carried out with significant elements of corruption in dealings related to them.
