Coral Gardening program beings at Bandos

Bandos Maldives Resort has started a coral gardening (also known as coral planting) program targeted to the tourists visiting the resort.

The program began on Tuesday under the resort’s policy to fully utilize the natural resources of the island.

Assistant Base Leader of the Bandos Diving Center, Hussain Shifaau said that the coral gardening program was started after studying the coral growth at the island’s reef. He said that the purpose of the project is the sustainable maintenance of the reef and the coral planting would speed the growth of the reef.

The resort said that under the program, the tourists would be planting pieces of coral that has broken off from the reef. The small pieces of corals would be planted at a “Coral Nursery” according to the resort.

In an effort to protect the environment, Bandos Maldives have an area of 800 square meters protected and declared a biosphere reserve.

Aquaculture is one of the most effective tool used globally to protect the life of the reef.
