Yet another resolution against Nasheed submitted to Parliament

A resolution has been submitted to Parliament, calling on Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate corruption in the transfer of the project to provide water and sewage services to Addu City from Hitachi to the UK’s Bywater Services.

The resolution was submitted by Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed.

According to the resolution, large sums of money were spent by the government for a service which could have been provided for free, and the citizens of Addu City are still to receive the services.

Hitachi had promised free delivery of water and sewage services, following the sale of MWSC shares to Hitachi.

However the project was assigned to Bywater, a UK company affiliated with Nasheed’s family, and the government spent $15 million in the process.

Moreover, Bywater was supposed to invest $28 million on the project by taking a loan for which the Maldivian government had to provide a guarantee; and the Maldivian government would be held responsible if Bywater failed to repay the loan.

The resolution accused Nasheed of deliberately depriving the citizens of Addu City of water and sewage services.

Riyaz Rasheed had submitted a resolution to Parliament last week as well, calling for the investigation of Nasheed’s illegal activities while he was President. This resolution has been accepted by the Parliament.
